The 10 Most Comfortable Cities for Singles in 2024

Have you ever wondered if you lived in a city that makes it comfortable for singles like yourself to get around, get ahead, and be comfortable?

In a recent survey, The Perfect Rug looked at over thirty locations all over the world to find the best ones for stag/solo fliers looking for comfortable places to live. Several significant factors were considered, including the average size of one-bedroom apartments, the building’s age, the cost of living, rent, and the safety index (which was calculated using the most recent Numbeo data). The walkability scores were obtained from the Walk Score website. The cities were ranked using the total comfort score that was produced by combining these factors.

At the end of it all, The Perfect Rug determined that these 10 cities were the best for those who were single and ready to mingle. Did your city make the list?

1. Miami, Florida

The Perfect Rug‘s study determined that Miami, Florida, is the top city to live — and work — in when you’re single and ready to mingle. The city that gave the world Pitbull, Miami Vice, and The Golden Girls gives its singles the highest comfort score on the list (with a comfort factor of 73.9 out of a possible 100).

The South Florida spring break capital got high marks for the relatively young buildings (with an average age of 50 years old, Miami’s buildings are the youngest on the list), spacious one-bedroom apartments (with an average square footage of 66.43 square meters, or 715 sq. ft.), and plenty of modern conveniences for young, attractive singles looking for the next Mr. Right (or Mr. Right Now).

2. Los Angeles, CA

Running in a close second to Miami is Los Angeles. The City of Angels gets high marks for the largest one-bedroom apartments on the list (with an average square footage of 67.2 square meters, or 723 sq. ft.) and young-ish buildings (the average building is about 60 years old, which means it too can provide several modern conveniences for up-and-comers).

And what isn’t there to love about El Lay? Outside of the Hollywood and entertainment industries — which, of course, are the bloodstream of the city — Los Angelinos enjoy vibrant weather, a bustling city life, and a laid-back culture that’s the perfect mix of chill and competitive.

3. Warsaw, Poland

Who would have thought that Warsaw, Poland, would have made the list of cities that are most attractive to young singles? Certainly not us!

Alas, the Polish capital’s high walkability score (a perfect 100) and equally high safety index (a most impressive 79.5) make it an attractive option for those who are single and ready to mingle. Plus, Warsaw is the most affordable city on this list, dollar for dollar, which makes it even more attractive for those who are just getting started in life.

4. Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is a beautiful city with a wealth of history for singles and couples alike. But for those in the former category, Bucharest is the fourth most attractive city to live in.

With the most budget-friendly rents on the list (a one-bedroom is the princely sum of $442) and the second-highest safety index (72 out of a possible 100), Bucharest is attractive to singles who are looking for a budget-friendly city option. They’ll have to sacrifice square footage, though, as the average one-bedroom apartment is only 42 square meters (or about 450 sq. ft.).

5. Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is a popular tourist destination that has all the old charm of a classical European city with all the modern conveniences of a 21st-century hub of industry.

Buildings are comparatively older, with an average age of 85 years, and apartments are on average 61.2 square meters (or about 660 sq. ft.) in size. The city appeals to singles despite having a higher cost of living ($1,101) and a higher rent price of $974 due to its vibrant lifestyle and greatest walkability score of 100.

6. Lisbon, Portugal

With charming old neighborhoods and a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is a city that is rich in Portuguese history.

Portugal, itself, gets high marks from American expatriates, who often leave the United States for the comfortable European lifestyle that the capital provides. The city is also a great option for singles because of its exceptional walkability score of 99, its vibrant lifestyle, and its average apartment size of 53.65 square meters (or about 577 sq. ft.).

7. Chicago, IL

The Windy City sometimes gets a bad rep because of certain politicians from certain sides of the aisle. But the reality is, that most of Chicago is a fun, vibrant city for both families and singles alike.

Singles give the city a high score because of its high walkability score of 77 and overall comfort score of 77. These rankings came despite The Windy City’s older buildings, which average 85 years, and a lower safety index of 34.

8. Athens, Greece

The better question is, who doesn’t want to live in Athens, Greece? You mean there’s a chance we can live on a gorgeous, colorful island and get our food fresh from the sea every day? Where do we sign up?

If you’re single and ready to mingle, the Greek capital city is the perfect place for you. It has a moderate average rent of $514/month and an average cost of living of $894/month, making it both affordable and gorgeous for the world’s most desirable singles.

9. Washington, D.C.

D.C. offers singles a whole lot more than Capitol Hill — it offers the residents the second-largest one-bedroom apartments on the list (with an average size of 67 square meters, or 721 sq. ft.) and a very walkable city (D.C.’s walkability is the second-highest on the list).

But there’s a cost to being the boss of the nation’s capital: the city has a very high violent crime rate and the highest rents out of all the other cities on the list (the average one-bedroom costs nearly $2500/month in rent). The cost of living is also pretty high, too, with the average being about $1,400 per resident.

10. Rome, Italy

Italians are known for some of the greatest contributions to culture — including its food, language, and music. But modern Italy is just as attractive to young singles who are looking for safe, affordable options for their budget, and the capital city of Rome is attractive in more ways than one.

The one-bedroom apartments do tend to run a bit smaller here (with an average size of 47.75 square meters, or 514 sq. ft.), but the average rent is less than $1000. And with a comfortable $900/month cost of living, the American dollar goes a long way — making it a perfect city for the digital nomad.
