12 Steady Jobs for Retirees That Pay Weekly
Retirement is a time to enjoy rest and peace. The average age for retirement in the United States is 65 for men and 63 for women. Still, even retirees return to work.
There are many reasons why retirees work again. Sometimes they want extra money, while other times they want something to fill up their time.
To curate this list of jobs, I consulted AARP’s list of part-time jobs for retirees. I also chose jobs that are light on the body and offer weekly pay. I chose not to include manual labor like warehouse, factory, or landscaping work.
Here are 12 steady jobs for retirees that pay weekly.
1. Delivery Driver
If you still have access to a car and a driver’s license, you might want to consider being a delivery driver. There are so many options with this weekly-paying job.
For instance, retirees can work directly for a restaurant or through an app like Uber Eats or DoorDash. Depending on the app, you can cash out on the same day!
2. Caregiver
Are you a naturally caring person? Plenty of retirees with caring and nurturing personalities work as caretakers. But why?
According to Family Resource Home Care, retirees work as caregivers to find connections. They are perfect for the job because they understand the struggles, and are caring, empathetic, and patient. In some jobs, the pay is weekly.
3. Bookkeeper
One of the best jobs for retirees with flexible weekly pay is bookkeeping. According to Intuit, bookkeeping comes with many benefits for retirees. Not only is the pay weekly but work arrangements and schedules are flexible.
Retirees don’t have to work full-time either. Instead, they can pick up shifts or clients sparingly. This job also provides plenty of room to grow and work-from-home opportunities.
4. Driver
This job feels like a cheat, but I think it deserves its own category. Not only can retirees make money weekly as delivery drivers, but as a driver in general. Uber and Lyft allow drivers to make their own schedules.
The money isn’t a lot, but some retirees get jobs for social interaction. The best part about driving for these apps is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life.
5. At-Home Cook
Another job that pays retirees weekly is cooking. There are so many ways you can get into cooking. You can either work as a personal, in-home chef or cook food and sell it from your home.
Personal, in-home chef jobs are more stable, but cooking and selling from the comfort of your home is more flexible. The possibilities are endless.
6. Substitute Teacher
Substitute teaching isn’t for everyone. The job can be exhausting with rowdy students but also rewarding. Every school district is different, but some offer weekly or even daily pay.
When I used to work in a middle school, I noticed about half of the substitutes were retirees. Many even worked for the school district and just needed something to do with their time. The money was a bonus.
7. School Bus Driver
This is a tricky steady job. While the hours remain the same and you can get paid weekly, it’s also exhausting. School bus drivers are in demand right now for a reason.
Still, for healthy and stern retirees, this could be a rewarding and cushiony job. There are part-time and full-time positions available.
8. Nanny
Being a nanny is another career retirees can enjoy while getting paid weekly. However, it doesn’t come without its challenges. While I’ve added this job to this list, not all retirees have the energy or physical health to take care of running children.
Still, it’s a good option for experienced care-giving retirees. Did you work as a teacher? Or a daycare provider? Consider becoming a nanny in retirement.
9. Tutor
Retirees have years of experience. The average retiree in the United States is between 63 to 65. That’s over sixty years of experience!
Tutoring is a fulfilling and flexible job. You don’t have to work an entire day. And most of your day can be spent sitting down. Popular tutoring subjects include music (piano, music theory, guitar, woodwind instruments, etc.), math, English, and more.
10. Crossing Guard
Crossing guards can make good money. The job is stable, cushiony, and very flexible. You only work a few hours a day. Retirees looking to give back to their community and socialize should consider becoming a crossing guard.
The pay and frequency vary, but in my local district crossing guards are paid weekly. There is no age limit either. In 2024, a crossing guard retired after 47 years at the young age of 89 years old.
11. Cashier
Very rarely are cashiers just cashiers. But if you can find a job as a retiree to work as a cashier, you’re golden! Some places even allow you to sit while checking out customers.
Retail and restaurant cashier jobs are abundant. You can practically throw a stone and find a place hiring. Pay depends on the company and area. In my experience, small, family-owned spots pay weekly.
12. Pet Sitter
Do you love dogs or cats? I know I do. A cushiony, although not entirely stable job, is pet sitting. It’s even better if you can board pets. This way, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home.
I have older family friends who love boarding pets. They use apps like Rover and get paid pretty quickly.
