13 Life Lessons From an Imperfect Mom to Her Imperfect Son
I had my son at the age of 42. Many would wince and say they couldn’t do that.
But to me, I love it and I love everything that I can offer my son because of it.
I have had time to get my life mostly together and I’ve learned a few things along the way.
My son will be turning one in a few weeks, and I still haven’t planned his first birthday. But he doesn’t care and neither do I. All he wants to do is play, eat, and laugh.
He keeps it simple. And carefree. Nothing else matters.
I hope he always feels this pure joy. He has so much life ahead of him, so much to do. Here are 13 life lessons I want to pass on to my son. May he see these lessons in me and grow into a perfectly imperfect man because of them.
1. Failure Is Inevitable, so Learn From It Quickly and Move On
Failure is a part of life, just like taxes, rising inflation, and everything else. We all screw up, and that’s okay.
The trick is to learn from it quickly and move on. Dwelling on your mistakes won’t help. It just keeps you stuck. Pick yourself up my son, dust yourself off, and keep going. That’s how we grow. In the end, these failures are the small stuff that won’t matter anyway.
2. Learn to Embrace Imperfection, It Makes Life Real
Perfection is a myth, a fairy tale we tell ourselves. Embrace your flaws because they make you who you are.
When we accept our imperfections, we become more authentic, more real.
Life isn’t about being flawless. It’s about being honest and true to yourself. Imperfection is what makes us human. I love it.
3. Don’t Just Save Money, Invest It
Saving money is good, but investing it is better. Simply stashing cash away won’t grow your wealth.
You need to put your money to work. Investing in stocks, real estate, or even a small business can yield returns that saving alone can’t. It’s about making smart choices and thinking long-term. Don’t let fear hold you back. Take very calculated risks and watch your wealth grow.
And remember son, scared money don’t make money. Don’t talk money with anyone who doesn’t understand the power of compound interest. I need you to always be able to take care of yourself.
4. Patience Is a Superpower, Use It Wisely
Patience isn’t just a virtue; it’s a superpower. In a world obsessed with instant gratification, learning to wait is invaluable. Patience teaches us to appreciate the process, not just the outcome. It helps us stay calm and grounded, even when things don’t go our way. Mastering patience can change everything.
5. Show Up, Even When It’s Hard
Half the battle is showing up, especially when you don’t feel like it. Consistency beats motivation every time.
Life will throw curveballs, and you won’t always feel up to the challenge. But showing up, day in and day out, is what makes the difference. It’s the commitment to keep going that shapes our character.
6. Success Comes to Those Who Take Action
Success doesn’t come from endless planning; it comes from doing. You can have the best ideas in the world, but if you don’t act on them, they’re worthless.
Eventually, you have to stop overthinking and start taking steps, even if they’re small. Consistent action turns dreams into reality. So, get up, get moving, and make things happen.
7. You’re Never Ready, Sometimes You Have to Take a Chance
You’re never truly ready for the big moments in life. There’s never enough money to feel secure enough to start a family, and it’s never the perfect time to buy a house.
Life’s milestones don’t come with perfect timing or guaranteed readiness. Sometimes, you just have to take a chance, dive in, and trust that you’ll figure it out along the way. It’s in these leaps of faith that we find our strength and make our dreams a reality.
8. Forgiveness Is Freedom, Embrace It
Forgiveness isn’t about letting someone off the hook. It’s about freeing yourself. I mean that my little one.
Holding onto grudges only weighs you down and keeps you stuck in the past.
Learn to forgive quickly, and you’ll find peace. It doesn’t mean you forget or condone what happened, but it lets you move forward without the baggage. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.
9. Kindness Costs Nothing, so Give It Freely
Kindness is free, and it’s the best investment you’ll ever make. Small acts of kindness can transform someone’s day, even your own. It’s about making the world a little better, one gesture at a time.
In a world where you can be anything, be kind. It’s a simple lesson but one that can have a huge impact.
Be something good in the world.
10. Never Give up on Your Dreams, Find a Way to Make It Happen
Dreams are worth fighting for, no matter how tough the journey gets. Find a way to make them happen, even if it means compromising along the way.
You can move mountains if you want. I promise.
Adapt, adjust, but never lose sight of your goal. The path might be long and winding, but persistence is key. Always push forward, because giving up is not an option.
11. Last Place Is Winning Too
Sometimes, last place is the best place to be. It gives you a unique opportunity to learn and grow without the pressure of being perfect.
You get to watch and learn from others’ mistakes and successes.
Being in last place stirs up curiosity, making you ask more questions and seek better ways to improve. It sets you apart, offering a challenge to rise and prove yourself.
Embrace it, and you’ll come out stronger and wiser.
12. Choose Happiness, You Only Have One Life to Live
Happiness isn’t something that just happens. It’s a choice. I don’t care what anyone says or does…you have to have a place for joy in your life.
You only get one shot at life, so why waste it being miserable? Make a conscious decision to pursue what makes you happy.
Focus on the positives and let go of what drags you down.
Life is too short to settle for anything less than joy. Choose happiness, every single day.
13. Build a Life With Someone, We’re Meant to Connect
Human beings are meant to connect with each other. Building a life with someone adds depth and richness to your experiences. It’s about sharing joys, facing challenges together, and growing as a team.
Don’t ever be afraid to open your heart and let someone in. The journey is so much sweeter when shared. I would rather have loved a thousand times than never.
My Son
I hope you know how much I love you, my son. You are the future, and the future is yours. When you are kind, humble, and God-fearing, you can do anything. May God surround you with love, support, and opportunities to flourish. I trust that He has a beautiful plan for your life, and I surrender your future into His loving hands. Enjoy every good, bad, and insignificant moment life has to offer.
